You Should Know Regarding History Of Front-End/Backhoe Loaders!

Some of today's widely used construction machinery was originally developed for agricultural applications. Crawler loaders, slippage loaders and excavator loaders were first used in agriculture and then improved and applied in other industries.

Loading accessories for wheeled and tracked loaders date back to the late 1920s, with frontend loaders appearing somewhat later. At the time, frontend loaders were operated by cable, and there was no practical way to mount the frontend loader to the loader due to the equipment required to operate the boom and bucket. Maine Steel Works introduced a small cable frontend loader for Cletrac crawler loaders that dug ditches but didn't have the gyroscope, because the entire loader had to turn to dump things out of a successful ditch.

It was not until hydraulic technology was mature enough to be used in construction machinery that loader-mounted back-end shovels became more practical. This was after world War II.

This idea emerged in the US and the UK respectively. The first documented hydraulic frontend loader was Vaino J. Holopainen and Roy E. Handy Jr. in 1947. Made by Wain Roy Corp.

In 1948, JCB introduced the first European hydraulic loader. Whitlock Brothers experimented with a frontend loader in 1951 and introduced a (excavating) loader the following year (1952).

At this stage, the manufacturers of these frontend loaders were independent of the loader manufacturers. Some companies produced both loading and frontend loader devices, but it was not uncommon for loaders to be equipped with loading and frontend loader accessories from different manufacturers. The average loader agent will sell one or two types of loading and frontend loader units at the same time, each manufacturer's own warranty.

With the application of frontend loader devices on loaders, Badger Machine Co. And other companies made frontend loaders that were pulled and driven by loaders. Badger calls this "Hopto" (hydraulically Operated Power Take Off) and this is being extended to the production lines of crawler and wheel excavators.

In 1953, JCB introduced a frontend loader that could turn 180°, and the brand LOGO appeared on the equipment from that time.

In the late 1950s, CASE and JCB developed their own loading and frontend loader units for heavy wheeled loaders. So far, the loader and all the assembly parts are made and guaranteed by the same manufacturer. This kind of industrial loader should be the earliest prototype of "busy at both ends", and thus began its extensive application in the field of construction.
